Natural Language Processing

You are here

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is utilized to translate narrative text into discrete coding (see
Ontologies) that can enhance knowledge of patients. NLP, as a secondary source of information, can supplement traditional data sources with additional adjectives (locative information, patient or family history) that may be beneficial beyond cohort identification.

We currently employ MetaMap as an NLP engine. For the intricacies of MetaMap, please explore the NLM web site. Please contact us for currently available results from NLP processing of Admission, Discharge and Physician Notes processed from UI Health.
